Learn about our factotum, Serge
When we considered acquiring the chateau, we heard it was supported by Serge, its factotum.
Its what? Factotum: Literary translation: someone who does a little of everything, like a handyman. For example, the handyman (Littéraire. Personne qui s'occupe un peu de tout, et, en particulier, des travaux mineurs (according to the French dictionary, Larousse).
Officially, we’re 6 months away from the beginning of our chateau adventure - that day when it officially became ours and we received the keys - and our relationship with Serge began. Since then, we have learned he is an invaluable resource, kind, professional, and generous.
He managed everything, from top to bottom, inside and outside, for the chateau’s previous owners. Now he helps us.
Yesterday, we had a meeting, discussing future projects for the remainder of March:
Management: I need to remind myself that I’m in France, not California, and people who work for you here are different. They work with you, not necessarily for you.
Review and complete electrical work in John’s office on the 2nd floor (former cinema room), paint walls, sand/stain floors.
Review barn projects: electricity and plumbing for a washing machine (does this mean we need a new septic tank - how small can a septic tank be?), new cement flooring for the cross ties, install a solarium, remove the grill between the cross ties and the stables, install a barn door to separate the cross ties from the stables, create a tack room in one of the stalls, installing an outdoor drain from the stables to (new septic tank?).
Apartment bathroom renovation: organize elements (McKean’s drawing, AI design, tiles, flooring, fixtures) with Serge, and order them (do we order from Porcelanosa or Leroy Merlin).
Tower shower conversion: follow up with the contractor (Beautiful Bathroom) about development. We need an estimate, materials cost, and timeline. What do they need from me to create an estimate?
An integral part of the Château de Riolas team, Serge is our dedicated factotum. With knowledge and experience in various trades, he ensures the chateau runs smoothly and efficiently on a day-to-day basis. I have learned that Serge’s meticulous attention to detail and strong work ethic make him a valuable asset to our chateau. Whether he is tending to the gardens, maintaining the historic architecture, or assisting volunteers with their assignments, his dedication and passion for his work shines through.
Serge just left to take the crew on a little field trip in L’Isle en Dodon. Originally, to pick up paint for Diego, a Workaway volunteer, who is painting some of the rooms. But then he heard that Karen, another volunteer, was considering buying a home in this area, so he’s taking her to look at a friend’s house on the market. Just because he’s that kind of guy - he looks out for the people he cares about.
